The top 1% – it’s a matter of perspective. A recent article by Emma Connors in the Australian Financial Review focused on what it takes to be among the richest 1% of Australian households. The number? $11.2 million in assets.
Clearly, there is daylight between the top 1% and the average, which is not surprising. The suffering of the bottom 10% in Australia must also be acknowledged.
But Australia is one of the richest nations on earth. So, before we start feeling sorry for ourselves, we need to consider that to be in the top 20% of income earners in the world, your salary would be $5000 U.S. – that’s per year. To get in the top 10%, you have to earn just $12,000. Do you top that?
Therefore, the poorest people in Australia (those who rely solely on Centrelink benefits) have an income which puts them in the top 10% of the world.
Thinking about this and our responsibility to the 2.8 billion people out there who earn less than $2 a day, Johnson & Tennent (and High Street Finance Centre as a whole) have decided to take some action.
